Today we start a new list at one Hundred. For the next few days, we will be presenting you with 100 amazing and unique Design & Art Galleries! This list will feature the best galleries on the planet and we’ll explore the core of their work and what they have done to be considered one of the bests in the world! From the US to Asia, this  100 Design and Art Galleries List will cover the amazing and unique world of galleries from the design point of view! In this Part I, we start by showcasing 10 amazing design galleries that are based in New York, the World Capital of Galleries. 

 

 

DAVID ZWIRNER GALLERY

Representing forty-three artists and estates, David Zwirner is a contemporary art gallery active in both the primary and secondary markets. Since opening its doors in 1993, it has been home to innovative, singular, and pioneering exhibitions across a variety of media and genres. The gallery has helped foster the careers of some of the most influential artists working today, including Luc Tuymans and Neo Rauch, who had their U.S. debut exhibitions at the gallery (in 1994 and 2000, respectively), and has maintained long-term representation of a wide-ranging, international group of artists. During the 1990s, the gallery began representing Michaël Borremans, Raoul De Keyser, Stan Douglas, Marcel Dzama, On Kawara, Toba Khedoori, Jockum Nordström, Raymond Pettibon, Thomas Ruff, Katy Schimert, Yutaka Sone, Diana Thater, and Christopher Williams. David Zwirner also maintains a complete publishing program, partnering with Steidl, Radius Books, Ludion, Rizzoli, Abrams, Aperture, and others, to produce exhibition catalogs, monographs, and artist’s books.

PACE GALLERY

Pace Gallery opens New York HQ with Calder, Hockney

Pace Gallery is a leading contemporary art gallery representing many of the most significant international artists and estates of the 20th and 21st centuries. Founded by Arne Glimcher in Boston in 1960 and led by Marc Glimcher, Pace has been a constant, vital force in the art world and has introduced many renowned artists’ work to the public for the first time. Over the past five decades, the gallery has mounted more than 700 exhibitions, including scholarly shows that have subsequently traveled to museums, and has published nearly 400 exhibition catalogs. SEAN KELLY GALLERY

Sean Kelly Gallery, founded by British-born Sean Kelly in 1991, operated privately in SoHo until 1995. During these formative years, it established a reputation for diverse, intellectually driven, unconventional exhibitions. The original list of artists represented included Marina Abramović, Joseph Kosuth and Julião Sarmento, who exemplify the Gallery’s commitment to exhibiting important, challenging contemporary art. The gallery also participates in five major international art fairs each year: Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, ART HK, EXPO Chicago and The Armory Show, New York.

 

MARIA GOODMAN GALLERY

For over thirty years, the Marian Goodman Gallery has played an important role in introducing European artists to American audiences and helping to establish a vital dialogue among artists and institutions working internationally. The Marian Goodman Gallery was founded in New York City in late 1977 and opened an exhibition space in Paris in 1995.

From the outset, the Gallery was committed to showing the work of innovative young artists.
